Re: 1966 Mercury 4 cyl 65 HP Fouling plugs

The Boat I Have this motor on is a 16' Sangster Trihull. The prop Pitch is a 19 pitch, and I do have a 13 pitch I could try on it.

As for the carbs, They are clean i disassembled them and cleaned them Last week.

One thing to note is that this lack of top end speed has been an occasionally re-occuring problem. Some times the engine will operate fine, boat will plane out, and I can get about 26 MPH ( As per the venturi speedo on the boat, not completely accurate I suspect), but then other times it will act as described in my previous post.

19" is HUGE for a 65 HP, I expect it'll run and plane out much better with a 13 pitch.

That Tri-hull sounds pretty heavy, and has a lot of wetted surface, so it's a lot for a 65 to carry.

The motor has to rev up to its recommended rpm to make power and it's really hard on them to lug with a large prop. Like trying to run around in a Geo Metro with the tranny in 5th all the time!

See how she does with the 13, I expect it'll be like night and day.

Actually I've had the 13 on it, last week when I took it out, and it did seem to work fine. i was only trying this 19 to see if I could get a little more top end speed. I'll put the 13 baqck on tomorrow after work and see what it does.
