Re: 1966 starcraft

Can these old boats take the weight of two motors on the back? I have a 5.5 fisherman that I want to use as a kicker/trolling/back-up.I I think it will add about 50-52 pounds hanging off the back. I don't know how fast a 5.5 will push this thing but it's got to be faster the paddeling.

Here's a link to the old merc site "Mercury Prop Chart"
http://www.maxrules.com/oldmercs/Propellers/Props/9.pdf

This page has the Merc 450 through the Merc 700. It gives a speed range for engine, boat weight, boat length, and . The 500 and 650 are both on there too.

My 66' Nassau w/ 1967 Merc ss 650 is running a 12 1/2" - 15 pitch prop (prop# A-48-37900A2). The Starcraft brochure said the boat is 500 pounds w/ a 1300 pound capacity, the motor should weigh around 250 I would think.

I had my boat out for the first ime last fall, no speedometer, but man, did it fly! It originally had a 75hp Evinrude on the back that thing was huge!

It looks like your making lots of progress. The boat looks great! Keep up the good work.
You'll be on the water soon by the looks of it.

Ok I found some rot on the plywood that goes from the floor to the gunnels. So I got two new ones cut out and painted just in time for rain tomorrow. One step forward.......

Got all my f-ups fixed on the paint job today. Haven't had much time to work on the boat lately. Hoping to get it in the water next weekend. Friday I will be painting the top and mounting the seats.

Hey BS, where are you going to splash her? Don't sweat the paint, heck that won't help her float. Besides, as I have been reminded many times, it's only a boat.;)

Thinking about lake chesdin so I can be rude like most of the other people there. Once I know it's dependable I want to take it to lake gaston or kerr/bug lake.

Re: 1966 starcraft

Dumped alot of time and money this month and finished the boat for now. Got everything ready to go. Filled up the gas tanks and started down the road. What a pain it was to tow this boat.It was pushing my Cj-7 around poping up and down and swaying back and forth. Got to the lake and had to have a smoke. Got everything ready to go started backing down the ramp and everything was fine. Almost have it in the water and the break pedal goes to the floor. yell drop the rope and dumped the clutch. smoked my rear tires all the way up the ramp. got to the top and the breaks work.

It towed better on the way home. Moved the gas tanks to the bow and took my kicker motor off. Everything else went into the bow. was able to go almost 45 before it started pushing me from side to side. Time to move the axle I think.

Oh I started it up with muffs when I got home and now the carbs leak.

Re: 1966 starcraft

Definitely sounds like low tongue weight to me.

Re: 1966 starcraft

Tere seems to be alot of slop in this old tilt trailer. If I pull on the trailer not the tongue it will move 1/4 in side to side. That 1/4 in at the tongue turns into 1-2in of movement at the axle. So when I hit a bump or the roads not flat the trailers axle shifts. Then it starts to pull one way then the other. The longer it goes on the worse it gets untill I do something to make it stop. Then it slowly starts up again.

So to fix this I am going to get rid of the tilt part of the trailer. Step one is to weld the trailer to the tongue insted of it just being bolted at the hinge. Next is to add steel gussets to help make that area abit stronger. Was also thinking about moveing the axle back about 4-5 in to help get more weight up front. The fix for bakes is a simple one. A new master cylinderand bleed the lines.

Re: 1966 starcraft

Well I'm glad you had the presence of mind to get up that ramp quickly. That could've been a bad scenario if you had panicked.

Trailers are a royal pain, and yours sounds extra painful. It sounds like moving the axle back will help tremendously. I have not needed a tilting trailer at any of the launches I use, so no big loss there probably.

Good luck to ya!

I knew that the gas pedal worked. lol. The jeep is good at slowing down useing the motor as a brake. Was a better the taking it swiming.

Re: 1966 starcraft

I got the boat in the water for the first time this weekend. Had a blast with the kids and wife. It didn't go fast but we still had fun. Fuel pump started leaking and the carbs need to be rebuilt. We still went through 4+gal of gas Just driving around. It ran better the more we ran it. Had B-12 in the tank to help prep it for rebuilding the carbs. I did do something odd. I would open it up and it would get on plane, But if I pushed it more it more it would pop out of gearuntill I eased up on the gas. Did I push the throttle to far forward or is it time for a new motor? I also had the trim wrong so it was pushing the back of the boat down in the water some. It also seamed that it would slip out of gear when the cavitation would start.

I think I found my answer. prop Blow -out. Sucking in air and starts sliping. I had the trim on the highest setting. It was the only thing I forgot before puting it in the lake.I'll rebuild the carbs and pump and take it back out.

Yeah either that or a spun hub on your prop.

Re: 1966 starcraft

Was thinking about that. But I that tah blow out fits just abit better. It was pushing water out of the lake after I got on plane. When I get done rebuilding the fuel system I'm going to try it trimed down to where it was when I bought it. If it still does it I'll have the prop looked at. The leg wasn't very far into the water.
