I have recently adopted a 1967 Cobia. A friend gave it to me. It needs deck work and transom work. A friend of mine and I have a fiberglass shop, and we overhaul boats. However we haven't handled a vintage boat yet. I have ridden on this boat for over 10 years and can't wait to have it in the water again.

My problem is i don't know the complete information on it and where it came from or its original layout. Can anyone help?

Consider it a blank slate and do whatever you want!

Welcome to iboats.

Hopefully we might have someone here who has the same boat.

Welcome to iBoats! Yeah, I agree with Luhrs. Very unique looking. That baby is a blank slate. Make it your own. Keep us posted. We are here to help you if you need it.

Well, today I took all the main hardware off the cap and cut away the 1.5 oz mat(four inches wide) holding the forward half of the cap to the hull. Waiting on the lumber for the transom. Currently it's pulp, or mulch really. I can't afford the good stuff yet so I'm going to hold off for a little while. The deck is rotted in certain places, but the stringers are solid and stout. I'll post some more pics tomorrow. Plan to be in the water by mid summer. Perfect time on the Outer Banks.

Here are some pictures of the mulched transom and the rotted deck. A few pictures of where I had to cut and chisel the 4in strap of matting holding the cap to the forward half of the hull. Any questions? And would everyone like an update as progress goes forward. Just wanting some feedback. Thanks all.

Here's some more pictures of the boat. I'm slowly taking it apart so I can make templates as it comes apart. I won't be taking the cap off until I have the hull securely off the trailer and on the ground, supported by a cradle.

You can see where I removed the wood on the aft end of the births. I first chiseled along the seam where the support for the birth meets the hull. I then pulled the glass from the rotten wood and then broke the wood free. I only along removed the wood near the hull because the rest will be trashed when I cut it out with a sawzall. I took the wood and glass that I carefully removed(it's rott so it will just fall apart) into the garage and re constructed it on top of some hard cardboard. And now I have patterns of where my birth/future cabin wall meets the Hull.

Hope that makes sense.

And Here's a few pictures of my motor that I'll be putting on her.

Its a good start, JD. That motor looks to be in fine shape also. You are going to have a real nice rig when you are done. Keep up the good work and keep the pics coming.

Re: 1967 17 ft. Cobia. Identifying and Overhauling Questions

Here's a little update. I'll post pictures tomorrow because it got dark before I could snap a few. I've separated the cap from the boat all the way around, as I've stated before. Now, a few weeks ago we had a heavy rain about to come in. So, I lifted the boat because it was drained as far as I knew, and I didn't want it to fill up. I realized as i was lifting it that it was extremely heavy. Water wasn't coming out of the drain holes but I knew it was wet.
I moved the cap forward about two feet. Started tearing apart the transom(soaking wet) from the inside. I removed the inner piece of glass in the biggest piece I can(easy to make a pattern from). In the process of removing the piece of glass and the surrounding deck, at least a gallon of water poured from both cavities above deck(i'll show in pictures tomorrow), and a gallon or two from between the stringers. In doing all of this I found out that there are two layers of deck on here. The previous owner just put new deck with glass over the old rotten one. the old rotten one is now extremely rotten. I'm taking this boat down to the stringers. Tomorrow I'll post some pictures and show what I'm talking about.

Hi Jd, i was browsing through the iboat site after posting my thread about restoring my boat and whether it was worth it to do so and i guess what i have is the same 67 Cobia that you have. Mine is avacado green with white top. I thought it was a 70 model but i stand corrected. It relly is a sharp looking vessel. Would love to collaborate with you on this project and see what advice you could give me. you can e-mail me at EDIT:)

Good Morning to all! This one is for JDakota and his previous post about his 67 Cobia restore. Just curious if the restore was finished from last year. Looking for possible update since I still have the twin boat needing a redo.
