1967 60hp johnson eratic spark where do i start?

Motor runs rough but runs, stalls out at low rpm's, spits and spudders? Where do I start everytime I fix one problem I am rewarded with another. I used a spark tester and tested at 1/4 inch gap, nothing except every now and then when I let off the starter I will get a strong spark. Same as when it fires up it usually starts right when I let off the key. Could it be the ignition?

I'd check the ignition switch, then after that, pop the flywheel and check out the points, coils, condensors. <br /><br />I heard several times mentioned about unplugging the cable and jumping the starter off. Supposed to rule out or confirm the ignition switch being faulty.

That engine has a belt driven distributor, and is 12 volt battery ignition. Run a jumper wire from the pos. side of the solinoid to the pos. side of the coil. Jump the starter at the solinoid, and see what you get.

do you have good clean tite electrical connections, and a fully charged battery?
