I've got a wonderfully running engine with an absolutely garbage lower unit. What year lower units will fit this engine? Thanks in advance for your help. (I tried searching but didn't come up with a whole lot - trying to do this on my phone!)

Any of the 4 cylinder motors from 1967-80's, any of the follwing hp/models: 650/75/800/850/80/85 as the all have a 2:3:1 ratio.. Dont install a 2:1 as it wont have any low end grunt even if you drop prop pitch

A couple of things to check before you buy. Shaft length, number of splines on the shaft, whether it does or does not have a speedometer pickup, and whether it has a preload pin or not on the top of the shaft.

I went through this on my '77 Merc 500. If buying from a recycler, ask if it was pressure tested to insure the seals are good. There are usually good/reasonable replacements on Ebay, that's what I did.

Great advice - thank you!
