6HP Carb question/LU question cross posted in case yall didn't read through all the spam somewhere else.
6702D Got the Ignition dialed in and tanked it,timing light says it perfect on the first mark both cylinders. New points wires condensers plugs. In order to hold a low idle and stay running I need to close the choke a little bit. Once I idle down and the sucking sound starts that's when I have to close choke a little,to me this says that the low speed circuit needs some attention or the packing is non existent or shot,is this the correct assumption to make here? If so,do you guys have a part number for a carb kit to install in her?

Next when I drained the LU only a little water came out with a little gear oil,not nearly enough combined to fill that LU. It shifts fine.I am going to reseal it if the rust I find in there does not look catastrophic. Can I run some ATF in there afterwords for a while to try and clean some of that up,or do you have a better recommendation? Do yall have a part number for the LU seal kit on that pup?
Thanks for reading along I could use some experience on my side -Thanks-B

Water is a no,no for the bushing above the pinion.------Your opinion may vary, but this lower unit needs to come right apart for inspection.----Look at the lower part of the driveshaft and the " cast in place " bushing !!

Some of those motors have cork washers in the carb, they can break down and plug the jets, but the packing can be bad on the needle too.

Its definitely coming apart.I will just reseal if its usable, but if theres no pitting and the shift lever looks like it will hold up should I try some ATF to clean it up some?I will inspect the bush.Thanks-B

Your explanation about the choke etc indicates that the carburetor may be slightly fouled, in which case, clean and rebuilt it as needed.... You can try the following adjustment procedure which may cure your problem for a time.

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

I will rebuild the carb,no sweat. As for the lower unit, amazingly I will be able to reuse all of the gears and bushings!Gonna throw a seal kit in and run it. The only thing trashed was the bearing housing so I will source another one. I could really use the part numbers for the carb kit w/float and the LU seal kit if you guys would be so kind. Thank you-B
