A guy brought this 1967 Evinrude 18 for me to fix the recoil starter. His nephews had taken the boat and somehow broken the starter. Before I got it his dad got it and went somewhere and bought a starter off of an OMC 25 hp of some year. He took everything apart like 2 puzzles and tried to build one good unit. He got it back together as close as he could and then threw everything that was left away. When I got it the rope would not retract because the spring was off the inside pin. I got it all back together and put it on the top of the motor and the pawl does not look long enough to reach the flywheel. I put a big glob of grease on the flywheel and put the starter on and pulled the cord, the pawl is 1/2 inch away from touching the inside of the flywheel.

The oldest parts blow up I can find for these motors is 1968, the parts I have look like the parts that go to a 1968 version of this motor.

Does anyone have a manual for this motor or have one this old to tell me what we are missing or have together wrong?

It all looks normal in the picture. You are saying the pawl pivots out but still doesn't grab the flywheel notches? That would be odd. I'd rather think it isn't pivoting out. That basic starter was used on a bazillion motors.

Everything is back together right and the pawl moves out to the position it is in there in the picture when you pull the rope, and it retracts when you release the rope.

That's what doesn't make sense, everything looks like it is right and it looks like the right stuff, but it isn't. :)

The fella is not sure which parts are from which motor. I said "tell me you have a box of left over parts somewhere" he said "dad says mom threw them all away."

A different sheave with the pins an inch further away from center would make sense, but would require different length wires too.

I looked at a 10 hp recoil.----It has that # on it.----The starters " look the same" and yes there are longer wires avalable.

My brother happens to have the exact same motor on a stand in his basement, he is going to pull the starter off later today and send me a picture. I'll post back with results.

Maybe you do have a 10hp starter there. But I'd be surprised if a 10hp will bolt up to an 18hp. But I've been surprised before.

Might try spraying with WD-40 and slightly loosening the spindle screw -- see if the mechanism is partially binding.

The gut went to his home today and dug through the parts he could find. This is the sheave his dad removed and the one we should be using, mystery over.

His dad works on the road so he couldn't look and thought the parts were gone. I told him to bring everything he could find that looks like it could be to this or any similar engine and we'll get him straightened out.

Thanks for the replies fellas, I'll post up when it is back together.

Is it necessary to lengthen or shorten the rope to get the arrows aligned?

Well we got the right parts all together in the same place and got her back together right. Recoils works and motor runs like a champ. Thanks for all the replies. Racerone, good call on the part # question, as usual. :)

As you might be able to see the sheave is not round where the rope goes.---So yes cut the rope as needed and then it will be easier on your arm to pull start this motor.
