Please forgive my ignorance. I am a new boater. Just bought a 14' flat bottom that came with a '67 Rude 9.5. I put it in a barrel today, and started right up, and ran ok. When I tried to twist handle below start the motor kept dying. Did fine revving up to fast. Is it ok to engage forward or reverse gears in start rather than "shift" on the tiller handle?
