HI Gang,

Am after some help with a complete rebuild on a dilapidated 650SS I just purchased. I'm doing a full restore (inlcuding paint) so its a complete strip down.

I've hit my first hurdles with the lower unit.

I'm down to the main bearing on the drive shaft and bush on the shift shaft (see photo) and cannot for the life of me work out how to remove them. Any ideas?

For the driveshaft you have to remove the propshaft and first - the driveshaft is bolted to the pinion gear. The slotted bushing at the base of the shift shaft is threaded into the housing and needs to come out if you want to remove the shaft. You MUST have the propshaft out in order to realign the shift cam onto the shift shaft.

Before venturing further, I would HIGHLY recommend acquiring a copy of a service manual for your motor. Check eBay, oldmercs.com, etc. If it saves you from breaking even one casting, it'll pay for itself ten-fold...
