I was wondering how / where I hookup a tachometer to my old Merc. I also want to know which type of tach I would need. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

You need a magneto tach and either hook it on onside of the ign. switch or the is a nylon blockmon the engine where the mag wire come out from underneath the flywheel just remove 1 screw and hook the sender wire up there

I have a tach here which states that it will work with conventional or distributorless ignitions. Will this work? Only issue I see is that it has a switch on the back for 4,6, or 8 cylinders..... And I only have 2!

won't work, need a marine type that has adjustable pole settings, not cylinders

The tach that dairic is talking about won't work as it works off the alternator pulses and your engine has no alt. Go to a autoparts store and explain you have a magneto ign and it's a 2 cycle, 2 cyl engine and you need a tach if the partsman can't figure it out ck a differant place, even a place that services lawn and garden equip. should be able to get one

laddies, i've got a faria tach on my '66 500 and i'm fairly sure its magneto and it works fine. everyone here told me it was magneto when i asked about how well it should charge up the battery with accessories on it. im i wrong and its an alternator?

You have an alternator to charge your battery. You can hook up your Faria tach by connecting the send wire from the tach to either yellow wire on your rectifier. Set the setting switch on the back of the tach to 12 pole/6pulse.

i'll be damned. i guess i'm going to have to check the charging system then. it charges poorly, like a magneto system but the tach works fine. was never worried about it as i was told on here it was a magneto system
