Hello Everyone,

I picked up a 1967 18' Starcraft Holiday, that is in great condition, doesn't require a restoration. Someone stored it for 20 years. It has a '69 115hp Johnson on it, weighing 245 lbs, that looks like it was not used heavily.

Unfortunately, it looks like the last owner was chasing problems with the motor - he ended up replacing the brain box (ECM). The motor runs...once you can get it going, and will run fine at speed....until you drop the throttle. At this point, the motor looses virtually all power, dies every time you increase the throttle, and behaves as if it is not firing on all cylinders.

I would have liked to keep running the motor, but don't want to chase problems on it, so I'm going to repower, unless someone has a brilliant suggestion for what may be wrong with the motor.

What I want to put on is a new 90-115 hp four stroke or two stroke - that will weigh about 350-400lbs. The original boat is rated for up to a 120hp motor, and 1900 lbs of motor/boat/gear. The transom appears to be solid - no signs of any problems.

Any suggestions, comments or warnings for either reparing or repowering?

Thanks,

Peter

I'd post the motor issues on our Evinrude Johnson engine forum. Lots of knowledgeable guys over there. Those old Johnsons were some darn good motors.

That SC looks like it came out of a time capsule...it looks to be in beautiful condition, congrats on a great find...

Just my 2?...seems like a fuel issue (carbs may need refreshing, fuel pump not functioning properly, or leak{sucking air} in the fuel pick-up line) from your description, however I agree with "woodonglass"...post up your concerns over on the Johnson Forum...

Best of Luck:)

Re: 1967 Starcraft Holiday Repower

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for all the advice on this. We ended up re-powering with a Yamaha F90 (one year old, only 28 hours on it). We ended up having to replace all the steering and electricals on the boat to accomodate the motor, so I now have a basically new boat. Next step.... do a complete restore on the inside in the next year or so. I sold the Johnson to a local guy who knows motors - he got it running and installed it on a late sixties boat.
