Hello all,

Just bought a bass buggy came with a 1967 Ted Williams Sears, Eska etc i read the other posts which were helpful for future problems thank you to all. Took the motor out yesterdayand it started up but I had to keep adjusting the choke with how fast i was going?? I was told it might be a compression problem. After it started up the first time it took about a hundred tries and it would start up and then stop over and over then it ran for a little bit and went again. Also is it suppose to spray water out the back because i dont think mine does so it could be overheating...If anyone has insight it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all!

MrCrabs,

Thank you for responding so quickly. I dont know much about the motor but it has the numbers written in marker underneath including the year so thats what i was going off of. The model number is 21758890 then it has 8880 underneath. It also has "tecumseh motor" which if I am correct is just what Eska called the motor? I hope thats enough info. Thank you again.

Thank you again. So does it sound like its the spark plug? Also the guy who sold it to me mentioned that 50/50 ratio of oil to gas would be fine could that also explain the sputtering? Thanks

50/50 ratio
I'm not sure what all problems that could cause...I'm suprised that it runs at all, generally these motors need carb kits or the Solid State ignition has craped out. but if its running at all thats a good sign. and if you get it running better by mixing the ratio correctly I would decarb it with some johnson engine tuner or sea foam.

yes its suppose to spray water from the 2 little holes on the leg of the outboard, you need a new impeller and make sure the whole cooling system is free from rubber bits from the old impeller. also when and if you buy an impeller get one with the replacement pin included. such as the one on this page. and for the record these guys are great to deal with.

and yes replace the spark plug

If you're having to add extra fuel via the choke, at higher rpm, it could be an air leak in the engine....if so, most likely a bad lower crankshaft seal.

if you mix gas and oil at 50/50 you definatly will cheat the engine of the combustable part of the mix, "gas"
also check the flywheel for side to side wiggle, that would for sure mean a bad seal and lower bearing.
