I was looking through my owners manual for my 1967 950 and I noticed mercury recommended white fuel and light aircraft fuel to be used in this motor. And only as a last resort to use a good quality premium automobile gasoline. So my question is what the heck is white fuel?? I've never heard of it. What is the octane of it? I think aircraft fuel is over 100 octane so now I'm thinking I may not be getting the full potential out of my motor since I'm running 91 octane with 10 percent ethanol (I have no other choice since I can't find non ethanol fuel).

White gas is also camping fuel gas. However a good 91 octane fuel would be fine. You can find non ethanol fuel at puregas.org

However your motor is 50 years old. What condition is it in? Have you done a compression check?

When I had the motor tuned up the mechanic at the marina preformed a compression test and he said it was at where it should be. He gave me a print out of the psi but I don't have it with me. But the motor is nor worn or tired. In my opinion it runs great but like I said mercury was recommending the white fuel or aircraft fuel before regular gasoline so it just made me think about if it would actually be more powerful if I used it. So if white fuel is Coleman camping fuel I would need deeper pockets to fill my tank lol.

the aviation fuel is to prevent knocking (detonation) the higher the octane rating, the harder to ignite the fuel (and the less power you can make)

your motor most likely has been running for the last 50 years on 89 octane or 91 octane

Most folks lack an understanding of what octane does !------Higher octane does NOT mean more power.------But if you can find / afford aviation fuel it certainly is made to a different standard .----It has MUCH better shelf life than automotive fuel.

The aviation fuel is 4.55 a gallon...a bit too pricey for me. I was just curious what all of that was about. Thank you all for your resonses!
