I just picked up a 1968 20 hp jhonson, looks clean i put it in the barrel one pull she started up. trans works fine but no watter was coming out of the hole. so figured it was the impeller, i ordered an impeller than started taking apart the lower unit, there was allot of water there by the way, but the impeller looks fine. this is my first impeller job i have seen shot impellers and this is not a bad one. any advise? please help i am tired of putting around with my9.9 i get there but slow
thanks.

back wash lower make sure pick up is clean, also flush water up the water tube. that motor has to be in a barrel, with water 1/2 way up the leg, it is not self priming.

It doesn't matter which way the impeller goes on.

No trick. It should move easily from F-N-R. If the engine is not running and the throttle is as low as it will go, does it shift ok?

No trick, just do it. But the "trick", if there is one, is to use a flashlight to peer in there and make sure the notched rod aligns perfectly with the screw hole before attempting to insert the screw. If the screw rubs on the edge of the notch, it will wipe the threads off every time. Then the screw will fall out, but never at dockside. Always 5 miles out to sea.

I trans works fine but no watter was coming out of the hole.

Hope you got the shift linkage figured out, but back to the original question; the 1968 20 HP Johnson does not have a telltale. The cooling water exits through the exhaust, which is underwater when you are running the motor. If you are running the motor in a barrel (as you should be) your best bet is to check the temperature of the cylinder head. If it is getting too hot you will know in a very short amount of time.
