I was helpng a friend put his fathers 1963 Elgin With a 1968 Evinrude 40 HP back together over the weekend. We were told the motor need a water pump. We put the pump in and it still did not pump water. Since the old pump was in pieces we thought maybe we put the pump back in the wrong way so we flipped the blades. It still did not pump water. I then pulled the thermostat(or what was left of it) out of the top of the powerhead. All that was in there was a black insert of somesort and a wax pellet. Is this what the used at thermostat back then or is something missing?
If we fired the motor up with out the stat in it it still would not pump water. However, if I loosened the three screws on the stat housing and essentially bleeding the system she would pump water like crazy. Now, does the stat need to be in there as some sort of check valve? Is it possible that because we could not find the muffs and were running it in a trash can that there was a lack of water problem? We had the water level up over the intake screen. If you keep the motor running after bleeding it would pump water fine, but if you shut it off you would have to bleed again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. My friend ordered the stat and will have it tomorrow.
Thanks

It may be the remains of the impeller. Start the engine in water with the thermostat cover removed to quickly see if water is getting up there.

Don't worry about getting the blades on backwards, although it is a good idea to get them going the right direction they will flip around to the right direction once the engine is started.

You did lube your impeller right?

There is a pressure valve with the thermostat. I don't believe this engine has a pee hole though.

Getting the water over the intake screens may not be adequate. The water really needs to be up over the level of the water pump itself.

OMC 40HP Big Twins have thermostats, not a black insert and a wax pellet. I have no idea what that might be but it doesn't belong there. Get a proper thermostat, BMC 5005440 or aftermarket equivalent by Sierra.
BoatBouy is absolutely correct - get the water level up over the pump housing level. Otherwise the impeller just spins air and doesn't prime itself. It needs to be submerged.

I was thinking that maybe the black thing is what is left of the original impeller. As I mentioned before...

My 40 HP johnson has the black insert and spring pellet in it. Mine did the same thing your is doing and it ended up being the housing needed to be cleaned a little more. And i did install pee hole in mine to help it out. I dont know alot about boats but this is what i did to mine. Hope this helps
