1968 55 hp Johnson - metal pieces in exhaust Housing Behind Propeller

I started then decided not to. Is it possible the shop had placed something behind a test wheel that remained and got caught up in the prop. Just seems odd, as original powerhead had no catastrophic failure, just was worn, so seems hard to believe this metal came from powerhead, especially given that it very thin metal strips.

Lastly, is the prop nut OK hand tight?

Prop nut is supposed to be hand tight then tighten until the next slot is open for the cotter pin. New pin should be used.

So, I went to the mechanic who built this motor and showed him the metal, and he immediately identified this as part of the exhaust deflector in the manifold. I took at look at a deflector, and sure enough it is. He noted that these were a common issue back (cracking and coming apart) when these motors were out in use back in the 70s. So, now have to pull the block to remove manifold and replace deflector.

Well, was able to remove the manifold, and found one piece of the deflector nearly falling into the exhaust housing. Does anyone known if this deflector really is needed?? I would love to not have to put one back in and have to worry about it coming apart......

It's on there for a reason. I would replace it

They're there to help scavenging on the exhaust and probably are good for a few HP at full trot. I'd replace if it were mine.
