1968 9.5hp Evinrude - Coils hitting flywheel

Working on this motor for a client - the laminations of the coils are dragging on the flywheel. The coils are as far back as I can set them and they still drag. There is some play in the magneto. I seem to recall an old post about dimpling the brass support ring under the mag plate to remove the play. Anyone recall the procedure, and do you think that will stop the coil drag?

probably a solution but they can't be out much are they seized differently than the old ones ?? what if you grind the face down 1/16 inch or two

The coils were already there and fairly new (the green ones). He brought it to me because the bottom cylinder wasn't firing. I replaced wires, points and condensers. I did have a problem with one set of points - couldn't get them to gap down to .020" - I had to bend them slightly. That's what led me to check for play in the mag plate. Do you think grinding down the laminations will hurt anything? Got good fire now. Oh, and you have to hold the throttle twist-grip when it's running, or the flywheel will turn the mag plate, and rotate the twist-grip back to the slow/stop position).

There have been reports of coils that won't move far back enough. Seems the problem is poor quality control. I'd suggest enlarging the screw holes over grinding the heels. However, the same reports say that the contour of the heels is wrong. Becomes apparent if coil locating ring is used.

Thanks guys - got her fixed. While moving the coils back a bit, I found an old U-clip that fits over the post where the points mount - it was stuck on the flywheel magnet. That must be what was hitting and causing the problem. Now she purrs!
