1968 Evinrude 9.5 sportwin shorting switch install

Hello All,

First time post, and here is my issue.

I bought a 68 evinrude 9.5 sportwin that needed a little work. So I got the motor running and now I can not stop the motor without pulling a spark plug wire to shut it down. I bought an OEM shorting switch but I don't know how to install it. Any one know?

those switches just get dirty inside due to corrosion ... simply peel of the rubber grommet clean the contacts and the little cup's rim inside and your done.

if the wires are not broken (open) along the way to the points ...your are back in business.

so it is easy to do. no need to buy a new switch if it is just corrosion .


​ on my last switch the threads were cracked so I just filled it with JB weld ( the thread section is hollow ) and remounted it ..

Well, I didn't really explain what I have going on. There are no old wires to work with because the motor didn't come with the shorting switch/kill switch. So now I want to install the switch but I don't know where the two woes go. While I was waiting for a response I tried it and it didn't work. I connected one wire to the connection point where the condenser and the ignition coil and the other to ground and it didn't work. I can hear the spark plug missing but still nothing. I also thought it was a bad connection so I cleaned them and still nothing. Any other suggestions. PS, the motor runs great

There are two ignition coils, condensers, and points in the magneto. Connect the wires from the kill switch to each point with the screw where the coil and condenser wires connect (one wire from the kill switch to one point and the other wire to the other point, instead of one of the kill switch wires to ground). It sounds like you're shorting out one of the points, but you have to short out both of them.

You may want to consider using a lanyard type kill switch instead of the original push button kill switch. The lanyard around your wrist acts as a safety mechanism just in case.

I tried connecting the two wires, one to each coil and still nothing. I bought the original shorting and no refunds. the switch only came with 2 wires. I spoke to a buddy of mine and he says I need 3 or 4 wires so one can go to ground. Any suggestions?

you need 2 wires ....as explained by sk57


​wire one.... over the condenser wire and coil wire on the point screw
​wire two.... same but on the other condenser wire/coil wire on the point screw

​if it does not work test your switch to make sure it shorts the wires to 0 ohms when activated

I have 3 ....9.5 late 60's... they all work the same 2 wires !

by the way.... you must HOLD (push) the button 2 seconds to be sure it won't start up

​a momentary push (to short) won'T kill itt

Here are some pictures from my 1970 9.5 hp Sport Twin showing the path of the wires. The switch has two wires coming from it (those wires are extended with terminal connectors and longer wires). The wires go up through the armature plate, and then connect to the points at the same spot the condensers and coils connect.

I did this exact thing. The picture helps a lot buddy thanks. Could it be that I adjusted the idle? Not sure why it isn't working if I did it this way

because your switch is defective ... did you measure it with an ohmmeter for 0 ohms while pressed

.
