Boring or not, yet another step to check off the list;) Azlo are you going to do anything to eliminate any possible squeaking? That is one of my concerns but I haven't decided which method to use. The other question is about any plumbing. Will you have livewells or run wiring under the floor through pvc?

Thanks for all the good comments fellas.

Fshngho, I havent planed on a live well yet but will haVE 1 in the future. Wiring i dont think there will be anything down there BUT, thats why MY floor will be bolted. Just in case I need to get down there again. Squeaking,,, I havent thought it yet. I guess I need to read up on that!!

I've seen guys use shots of that spray expanding foam in spots to lock things together. The stuff eats styro so if you do you just have to watch how much you use.

I'd double check it. It might have been the brand or the propellant that was the problem.

Had some time today, so I took the transom out to get it ready for epoxy resin. Gonna sand and clean. But I ran to a problem wich I will post later.

This is the problem I ran into. I have the original transom housing (pre-alpha) and in my crusade to restore my tin boat i bought what I thought would be a replacement for my housing.
But as you can see It looks like the hole where the housing mounts to the transom is not shaped for the newer one and will not fit because of the bottom exhaust port.

(Newer on the left) (original on the right)

After doing some research it seems all I need to do is just shape the transom to fit. And also get a exhaust tube for it & we will be ok.

Anybody see anything wrong with that or suggest something diffrent?

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

Well just when u thought u had things figured out, murphy visits. SO I went ahead & started to get the transom to fit, cut and shape when I started to think why dont I check the transom plate that came along with transom housing that I bought through craigslist. Well Im glad I did!! Wrong Transom Plate!!!

resized_MAH005711.jpg

Dam you Craiglist!! I dont know if the seller knew , but this plate does not fit the housing unit he sold me as a combo. I guess thats what I get for not researching. But if u noticed the housing unit has a 5 bolt exhaust tube. This plate would fit my previous unit. As a matter of fact its the same. I need a plate that is alongated down so the exhast can fit. So after some reading (basically the weekend), I realised that I can get the transom online. But they were mostly alpha 1s. Theyr ads would say that they would also fit pre-alphas,,,, not so true!!! I noticed that the distance of the rear motor mounts on some of the advertised trasom plates were more narrow. After being disgusted of my mishap, i was not truly convinced that those were the right plates. Im glad I was becasue they were diffrent. All the Mercruiser inner transom plates for Alpha One Generation One, Alpha One Generation Two & Bravo should be 9.5? center to center on the motor mounts. But some pre-alphas have a lenthg of 12.5" & 14.5" on the motors mounts.

resized_MAH005712.jpg

Mine is a 14.5" as you can see. SO in conclusion I need a pre-alpha transom plate of 14.5" motor mount length with a 5 bolt exhaust tube set up. PLEASE correct me if Im wrong.

With all the convulsions i was having I took comfort in the results of my encapsulation with "Max Bond". Let me tell you, this might be my first experience with epoxy resin, but I love this thing. It went on easy as thinned out honey.

MAH005715.jpg

The only thing that worried me was it did not get hot, or warm for that matter, while I was mixing it. It struck me curious because of the ad explaining to be careful of the thermo effect from combining the resin & the activator. But after 12 hours, its like a Hooter table! Love it. I almost dont want to paint over it, it looks so good. Well enough rant im gonna make best of whats left of this weekend, I know this is too much reading for you guys.

No such thing as too much reading if we are learning something Azlo. ;)
Sorry about the transom plate but I'm glad you caught the difference. That epoxy looks great. Who said you have to paint it?:p

U know, I was just thinking of adding non skid on the second coat of epoxy. I think it would last longer than paint holding the non skid. Hmmm.

It would probably work. As long as you go over top with something as the epoxy doesn't like uv.

Well I as thinking more like sprinkling the non skid on the second coat of epoxy then paint over that. I would think that the epoxy would hold the non skid stronger than the paint would. Versus mixing it with paint. I dont know.

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

So in the persuit of wasting time, money and energy, I decided to try my idea of epoxy with sand instead of mixing it with the paint. Had a little left of epoxy so I mixed it with sand.

MAH005743.jpg

This thing was thick! Brushed on & this is how it looks.

MAH005745.jpg

So noticed that the sand bottomed out & the epoxy was mostly floating, almost defeating the purpose of adding sand.

MAH005746.jpg

So I added sand on top of the already laid epoxy. This is how it looks.

MAH005753.jpg

I only did half just to feel diffrence from the other half.

MAH005758.jpg

If its good, then we will go on to the next step, painting. Again the theory behind this is that the epoxy will hold non skid stronger then just paint. We will see. Will wait and report back. Criticism welcomed!!

Guys my foam only squeeked a little at first. I have never heard anything once we splashed the boat. and yes, the liquid or spray foam will eat the board stock wherever it touches it.

Great job on this one bud!!!!!!!!

Thanks NB! SO many variables. If mine squeaks I can always unbolte and add some plastic. Nice.
