My '68 Johnson 40hp water pump won't pump. I've had it to two marinas and neither could figure out what the problem is. The engine runs fine, but gets no water. I'm no mechanic but I figured if the the mechanic I paid couldn't fix it, I might as well give it a look. The impeller has been replaced three times since I got the engine (the last two needlessly). The water pump is put together properly as far I can tell from looking at diagrams. I have no reason to believe that the guys at the marina would put it together wrong. I removed the lower end and rigged up power to the drive shaft. I placed the lower unit in a tank at operating depth and cranked up the drive. Nothing. With the drive shaft cranking I lowered the unit into the tank. The pump started to send a relatively steady stream of water out the starboard copper tube when the water level reached the pump housing. It seems to me the pump can push the water just fine, but can't draw it up to the housing. I checked the connections on the feeder tube and they appear to be sealed tight. I don't think the problem is there. There is a little hole in the housing opposite the tubes that was blowing bubbles when the water level got to it (after the pump started pushing water), I don't have any idea if it is supposed to or not. If not, does anyone know if a bad shaft seal could cause this? I'm at a loss as to what to try next.

Most water pump housings have a air bleed hole near the top of the housing so that water can enter the the housing from below while the air is bled out of the top.

If the air bleed hole is blocked, the impeller will just continue to spin in the air until overheating destroys it. The need is to open the air bleed hole, then to make sure that water covers the pump completely before starting the engine.

Re: 1968 Johnson 40hp water pump problem

Good eve!!

Been down this road. '71 'rude 40 hp had same problem. Drove me crazy. Back to the wrench and he thought for a few minutes at what all I had done and told me that most likely the head gasket was blown. WHAT? He said "Think about it, if the pressure gets by, it squishes back into the water jacket (if that's where it's blown) and has more pressure than the pump, keeping it from going up to the engine and cooling." Made sense to me, so I pulled the head and sure 'nough, bad spot. Put new gasket on 4 yrs. ago and the rest as they say is history!!

Check your compression and see what up.

Thanks for the info. After I thought about it, the head gasget makes sense to me. Like a leaky seal on a shallow-well pump. I'll see about getting a guage on the cylinders this weekend. I may just go ahead and replace the gasget. Any info on the loosening/tightening sequence and torque specs?

Seloc says 168-192 IN./LBS. NOT ft/lbs. Start in the middle, go across to opp. side and start zigzagging until you get to the outer bolts. Same as any head pretty much. Be sure to check your compression first before replacing the head gasket as there is also the possibility that an exhaust housing gasket could be blown also, but not as likely.

If it's anything I own, it would be likely. I always get all the goofy problems whether it's marine or land. Luck to ya!!
