I was reviewing the wiring diagram for this motor and noticed the previous owner removed the safety switch. The lead from the starter solenoid to the safety switch now goes to ground.

Any idea where I can purchase a replacement?

Also, any idea where it should be located when I re-install it?

Lastly, what is the exact purpose of the safety switch? I assume if there is an electrical issue it shuts the electrical system down thereby stoping the motor.

Thanks,
Mike

It is part number 382548 and is available from any Evinrude dealer. It goes on the top main bearing head (top of crankcase, below the flywheel) and is operated by the timer base.

It prevents starting the motor at high throttle settings. "Safety" because if you should happen to start it in gear and at high throttle you might run over the dock. Or a kid standing by.

Thanks. Glad I reviewed the wiring diagram as well as taking your advice.

Surprised that the prior owner didn't replace the switch when it went bad.

Thanks again.

Hint: It is super easy to blow the safety switch in a micro-second by dinking around trying to troubleshoot the starting system without knowing what they are doing. If you accidently apply 12V to the safety switch without going through the solenoid coil, it's a goner. People blow them that way and just choose to defeat it instead of fix it.

The switch probably got left off after the owner priced the switch.

About 40 bucks. Prices are insane. I just had to buy a battery for my Honda motorcycle. Dealer wanted 90 bucks for it. That's way more than a battery for my truck and it is nowhere near as big or powerful. Oh, I got one from Battery Supply for $55. Still insane.

I thought is was probably more. What really get's crazy are those kill, or electric shift switchs'. They don't make the electric shift switchs anymore, but when they did.

Thanks.

I was able to locate the switch in eastern MA for $32.50. FYI - got the last one in the area.

Thanks again for your help.
