I have a 69 Glasspar Avalon with the original Johnson 65 VXL-14B with a couple of issues.
1. starts and runs good at full throttle, idles rough but does not like part throttle cruising. Smokes a bit and fouls regular plugs (now using Splitfire plugs with more sucess). Carb has been cleaned but not rebuilt. What else to look for?
Can I cut back on the oil mix (using 50:1)to reduce fouling?
2. Wiring harness nearly toast. Insulation is brittle around the plug and corrosion present. I do not to spend big bucks on a harness, so I am considering cutting out the plug connection and splicing in new wires as required. Any reason why not? Wiring issues related to issue #1?
3. Can I use copper core spark plug wires?

Welcome to iboats neighbor.

1 Rebuild the carb. Absolutely mix 50:1 using regular gas and outboard 2-stroke oil.

2 Do whatever you have to. Probably not contributing to #1.

3 Don't use anything but copper plug wires. I'm not a huge fan of Splitfires, but yours is probably strong enough to be okay. Some models could suffer.

Thanks,
If I wanted to look for a parts motor for future rebuild etc. where can I research interchangability with other 4 cylinder Johnsons?

1968 was the only year they made the V4 65hp. Prior to that the basic 70.7 cu.in. block was used for the 60hp and the 50hp, however very few parts will interchange.

TNTS, what you have just done is considered "thread hijacking" and it is considered to be bad manners. This is also not a place for advertising a motor that you wish to sell.

iboats is, however, a good place to ask questions and receive great answers.

Welcome to iboats.
