Re: 1968 Johnson 65hp v4 - No Spark

Is there a chance that the flywheel has never been removed?

Also, once I get this motor up and running, how long should the new starter solenoid, rebuilt starter, new coil, and remaining ignition updates going to last?hope this is not something I will need to do every few years of use.

Thanks

"Is there a chance that the flywheel has never been removed?" So???? It will still come off. Unless the motor is a bucket of rust.

Hey, the originals went over 40 years. Will that do? Seriously, periodic tune-ups and maint are to be expected. That would include stuff like you are doing now. IMHO, 90% of starter solenoids are replaced unnecessarily when the real problem lies elsewhere. When did you last replace one on your car?

Yeah. Good point.

Looks like the nut on top will have to wait until I run out and pick up a socket that will fit. It's too big for my largest socket which is 1 1/4".

My gut on the motor is that the prior owner had it running 2-3 years ago and then it failed for a reason that is most likely under the flywheel. He then let it sit which caused the starter to freeze up.

I decided to replace the older non OEM ignition parts (solenoid and coil) and will consider replacing the spark plug wires if needed.

FYI - I still will need to tackle the fuel system and change out the impeller, etc. and perform the maintenance on the lower unit.

This is the vxl-14b so, how do I confirm that this motor has the hydro-electric shifting I have heard so many concerns about?

Thanks,
Mike

That wasn't so bad....

Got the nut off with little problem. Used a puller and one rap of the hammer on the top of the puller and the flywheel popped loose.

Looks like the reverse cut-off spring is missing. I saw some metal particles there before I blew it out with the compressor.

Looks like some work was done in there as a couple of wire have been taped.

Will post a picture later this evening.

Thanks,
Mike

I'm so glad my old V-4 has the automotive style points and ignition, no need pull flywheel, I hear they can have either style.
Do you know the torque required on the nut? Torque is very important with tapered shaft keyway fit flywheel.

Sure.

From the service manual. 70-85 foot-pounds.

Please let me know what parts should be replaced.

Thanks,

If your motor has an external shift lever on the right side of the cowl, it is a standard gearcase and NOT electric shift. There are large and small versions of standard gearcases. Good luck!

Hopefully a little easier on the eyes.

Re: 1968 Johnson 65hp v4 - No Spark

Seeing the electrical tape on some wires under your flywheel reminded me of why my 1968 Johnson 100HP will not run. My engine wiring harness insulation is badly deteriorated on most of the wires. Cannot troubleshoot the ignition system until I rewire it. Forum guru Joe Reeves told me OMC had a problem with one of their wiring suppliers for a few years around 1968. Of course, the issue didn't surface until many years later. Just wanted you to have this info before you get too frustrated trying to troubleshoot your motor. Hang in there. F R will get you through it.

Thanks.

Yes. I do plan on replacing all of the wires under here.

Also, I have located a replacement for the "missing" reverse spring as F.R. Predicted that I would have to.

Trying to locate replacement sparkplug wires for all four cylinders now.

Thanks

Re: 1968 Johnson 65hp v4 gas exiting the lower unit

Re: 1968 Johnson 65hp v4 gas exiting the lower unit

Please help. I have gas exiting the vent plate which has three screws at the lower unit when I turn the engine over. Is this normal? Is it because the engine is flooded? Thanks.
