Hi,

I am new to boats and not knowledgeable at all about motors.

I purchased a small boat which has a 1968 Mercury 110 9.8 hp outboard motor on it. I do not know how to tell if it has side intakes or not. I would like to buy a motor flusher ("earplugs") so I can start it up. Anyone know if a motor flusher will work on this motor. Was hoping to avoid the garbage can method of starting it.

Thanks in advance.

The water intake is a small louvered metal piece underneath the anti-ventilation plate on the lower unit (the horizontal 'fin' running around the perimeter of the gearcase).

You'd need a flusher that would press into the intake and stay there under water pressure. Don't know if anyone makes these anymore.

A used plastic water barrel or something similar makes a great motor test tank, and you'll also be able to get a good idle mixture adjustment with the motor warmed up & running in gear in the barrel. Any time I've used a regular old garbage can they've been torn up in short order. The other barrels seem to be a bit more durable.

You should have no problems finding a suitable barrel on your local www.craigslist.org for little $$$ or even a Freebie.
