1968 Mercury model 110 - Reverse\forward lower unit help

I recently bought a used 1968 Mercury model 110 9.8hp motor. Runs great,but when i took it out on the water and shifted into reverse, it went forward and vice versa. So somehow reverse and forward are switched. Is it possible that someone put the lower unit back together the wrong way or is there something else I should check?

are you sure it is backwards? I may be wrong but do not see how the gears could be reversed. will have to look at mine to verify which direction the lever goes for which way do not think about it when on the water just shift and go.

the only way it could be reversed is if someone took it apart and has gears backwards and idk if its possible to go back together this way and work but sure doesnt seem like it ..or if u have a control box something is switched on it etc ....

Here is a photo of the shifter. Which way should the propeller turn when its in forward and when in reverse.
