Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

Been there, done that on BOTH counts  Here's my foot-too-short steering cable cuttin' across the back http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/DSCF2633.jpg and yeah, ya gotta pull the motor (again) to install it. I did the same thing. My Jupiter didn't have the slanted splashwell corners so it was never a problem on that boat so I didn't think about it on the SS. Dulp!

Hey guys... thanks for all the input! Ya, it was run under the gunwale.... up high... so no mater which way I tried ---- even the ez method I could not get enough length out of it to attach it --- really close!! But not enough.

The new cable/kit comes in Tuesday (crossing my fingers)... if all goes well and I can pick it up....

T-5 Days Till Splash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

--- Thanks man ---- but for now I'm going the new kit route as I will need one regardless for the Falcon as it is pully steering...

So... what's left to do for splash.... really boils down to these items...

1. Steering cable back in
2. Connect motor electrical at engine (controls are installed now!!)
3. Stickers (Starcraft name, boat name and #'s) on boat

That's it for Splash Time!!!!

Going camping this weekend... so it would be nice to have the boat!

Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

Anyway, long and short of it, I bought a 15' system this morning and it should be in mid week if all goes well. I will figure out how to get this steering system working on the Falcon --- or sell it.

So, there you have it. If anyone knows how to get the steering cable into the motor without having to pull the motor and tilt it to the side, that would be most helpful!!!

Oh ya, almost forgot, I moved the boat about 8" further forward so that there is only about 1 inch of the hull beyond the bunks... just didn't seem right hanging that far past.

Sheesh, I go away for a few days and have so much catching up to do!

I won't say it can't be done, but it will be harder than he|| to get the cable inserted in the motor after it's mounted on the boat. I did mine as I had it hanging from the come-along as I mounted it and even that way I needed three hands to make it go. Somehow after a lot of struggling I got it together. That was a tough job. Really stinks that your cable is too short, it's that kind of delay that's extra frustrating.

Glad to see you pushed the boat forward, I was a little concerned when I saw how far it was sitting back. With your skeg so close to the ground, you'll need a transom saver. I know a lot of people tow with the motor just tilted up a little with the power tilt, but I wouldn't chance that with how little clearance you have.

The cover looks good. Is it trailerable? From the reading I've been doing, I decided to make my trip uncovered (180 mi.) because I read in several places that unless you have an actual custom-fitted tight cover, those semi-custom ones will get torn apart at the corners & contact points pretty quick. I was lucky to have a clear day for travel.

Looks great and I'm glad you're getting ever closer & closer to your splash! Funny how all those little details at the end add up & cause so many delays! The boat & motor, and trailer for that matter, look fantastic, you've done a great job. You'll be the envy of the Starcrafters! Great work.

Thanks LL --- Yah I have a transom saver ---- so good to go there. Also the cover is designed for trailering --- used it many times on the the other glasser with no issues. The motor will be alot higher up when I trailer it --- and secured... with the t.s. Yah it is a pain to get the motor on and off --- but I am getting much better at it and a lot more efficient too!!! Now the bolt holes are truly gooped with 4200!!!

Take care.

LOL! It wouldn't be so challenging --- except for the fact that there is a slope to my driveway!! Makes it interesting when the hoist I am using does not have wheel locks!! I made my own chocks... which kinda work ok...

My son still is asking only one question (relevant in a 4 year old's mind and 40 year olds!) --- "Does it float Daddy"??? I keep answering with complete honesty ---- "It should!" and "not to worry... I'll go in it first!" He liked the second part of the answer best!

Here's to T-5!

Cheers!

I added step 4 to your checklist for the benefit of the 4 and 40 year olds.

1. Steering cable back in
2. Connect motor electrical at engine (controls are installed now!!)
3. Stickers (Starcraft name, boat name and #'s) on boat
4. Camo the SCUBA gear

It will be a great day. :D

Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

Looking forward to seeing her float InMotion! I remember that feeling... oh ya it just happened last Sunday for me! :D Not gonna lie... I was kinda nervous, was she gonna float? sink? subsurface? was the motor gonna come flying off? Did I remember the plug(s); yes i have 3 . Its a great feeling to have something you spent hours, days, years building glide through the water on a beautiful summer day! Looking forward to pics and vids! Oh and Murphy visited me in the other way... my steering cable is a foot too long and is deforming the crap outta my boot with such the hard bend in it like ur not suppose to have... but i figured hey ill use it till it craps out and then order a shorter cable

Thanks LL and Piece. Yup... ready to ummm roll??? Glide? Should be interesting to see how it all turns out. I probably have 20 lbs of tools and spare bits for "just in case" moments!

Nonetheless --- I am exited and gratefull that I am at this stage! It's been a trip man!!!

To think... I'm starting this all over again in a month!!!
