What I often do in these cases is take a length of clean rope - the smooth polyester diamond braid works well - remove the spark plug and stuff the rope into the spark plug hole with the piston 1/2 to 2/3 down in the cylinder. There's a slight chance that if you have the piston all the way down some of the rope might get in the intake or exhaust ports and the piston/port could cut a piece off - not what you need. At halfway down, the ports are still closed. The rope will fill the cylinder so the piston will act as counter-force to your tightening of the nut.
I heard this trick from a motorcycle mechanic, and have yet to damage an outboard motor doing it. When you're done, just pull the rope out, put the spark plug back in.
