Hi guys,
As some of you already know, my old Merc 1000 died some weeks ago with a corroded block. Well I've dug the 1000SS I built years ago out of storage to replace it. It was 99% complete and only needed the lower unit finishing off etc
Well the thing is in one piece but refuses to start. It will occasionally pop whilst cranking, but not bite.
I checked the timing with a strobe gun and it is WELL out. I mean so much so the timing mark doesn't even register. Number one piston is at TDC when the alignment mark on the flywheel points to TDC, and the mark/pin on the distributor matches this.
My only thought is that when I've put the flywheel back on the block after I've rebuilt it, is that I haven't put it back in the correct place. Without removing the flywheel I can't check. As I built this about five years ago while I was at uni, I just can't remember whether these outboards of this year had a keyway or one fat spline to mean you could only put it on one way? Is this the case? If it is I'm out of ideas why it won't crank
It's got betweek 110-125psi compression on all six cylinders, is sparking at all plugs, plugs are new, all connectors have been checked and re-seated, coil seems good, starter bendix disengages etc
Any help you guys could give me would be really appreciated as I'm really tearing my hair out on this one! :facepalm:
