1969 115 evinrude question please help

i have a 69 erude it seems to run real good,but it shifts kind of hard and when you turn off the motor even in neutral it wants to kick real hard almost like it wants to restart ,not a backfire just a hard kick and a mighty splash then it shuts down...any idea what the problem might be ?

from control to motor, is yours electric shift?

That should be Hydro-Electric shift. It defaults to forward gear when not running. It has a complex wiring system to prevent that instant slamming into gear when you turn the key off. It is driven by the alternator and involves a pair of shift diodes and a blocking diode.

Do you have the original wiring or a cobbled up make-do? Is your alternator working?

Bingo...yup it is a Micky mouse wiring job it has a red harness plug going into a black plug...would that also explain the hard shifting ? its strange sometimes it shifts like glass and sometimes it like bamm same with the hard shutdowns..and ideas ? will that damage anything ?

switch it out with toggle switches. one controlling the n-f-r and one that deactivates/activates the reverse gear(acts like a safety switch).

Hey thanks guys, at least now i have an idea what the problem is,actually i ditched work today and took my boat out...it ran awesome it has allot of power
more than i need,it was a perfect morning here in Illinois so i went for it haha
glad i did all i did was turn the idle down just a bit and then shut the motor off while its still in gear it worked bitchen now all i got to do is figure how to catch fish..the rapala didnt work out on fox lake.. haha thanks again
