That engine is in great shape River - Runner! Have you done any restorative work or is it really good care?
Perhaps you'd consider sending a scan of your '69 brochure to www.old-omc.de I noticed they're missing the Johnson one.

Just good care. The motor is all factory original except for new spark plugs, points and condenser. Starts and runs like new. The motor still has the original shear pin in it (doesn't shear but bends) and has been run countless hours. Just some grease where needed and new lower unit oil sometimes. No touch up paint was ever used and don't ever remember waxing it, just a wash once a year.

I did acquire a spray can of No. 6901 Johnson factory approved green lacquer many years ago for the bottom of the skeg but never touched it up yet. Then it wouldn't be original!

The motor is just treated with respect and is always garaged with the boat.

I just acquired a scanner so will have to learn to use. Thanks Paul, I will try sending to that site.

With all the use on the motor I sometimes wonder what will be the first thing to break down on it.

River-Runner, Now that is Beautiful looking Motor. thanks for the Pics, i thought the hood stickers looked different.

i bet your the guy to answer this for me. i put plugs in, cleaned the carb, Good fuel. when i set the Low spd needle back in i went to soft seat and back out 1 1/4 turns. Motor runs fine, but at times it will really JERK like its missing or something...but if i keep the rpms up a little higher it is fine. i worry about this because i dont want to tear up gears going into rev or forward with it so high..do you have any thoughts for me? i could video the motor running so you can see and hear it...and post it.

thanks again for the pics.

Re: 1969 25 hp assistance please

I just use outboards and know very little about trouble shooting or tuning them in. I never had any trouble other than when the points or condenser went bad on my motor. That was years ago and a mechanic changed them.

I would check or change the points and condenser on your motor. When mine went bad the motor seemed to miss or run on one cylinder. It's cheep to do.

This is something different now and not related to your problem. I bought one of the first 1969 25 hp. motors. When I took it in to the dealer for a checkup after break in, he had his mechanic drill either one or two 7/32 holes up at an angle in the upper water exhaust opening, using a fixture and electric hand drill. They said it was to be done to breathe better. It ran fine before this was done but if I wouldn't have took it in, it would never have been done.

You should have two angled holes there, one above the other. Over the years, sometimes I will see motors like mine and I will check if the motors have those two holes. They all did.

Also, after I use this motor I slowly pull the rope a couple of times as to not start it. The motor will hold a little water, doing this drains it out.

Hope you solve your problem because it is a great great motor. More pics coming.

when it jerks is it in gear or neutral or both. search 'cough' or 'sneeze'. if it's jerking or clunking while in gear and under power it could be the clutch dog. hopefully it's just the cough and sneezing this is a fine tuning carb problem. it took me a while to work the one out of my 55 15hp.

it only does it in Neutral..before i sheared the pin this thing ran great..it still does dont get me wrong i just want it to be perfect..after i did that, i decided to clean the carb, i pulled it off and ran 2 can of cleaner through it. now it idles a little to high, the low speed needle is fine, but i cant get ot to idle low enough to shift. i mean, it will go into gear fine (F) but reverse unless i really jam it in it just grinds, that didnt happen before i cleaned it. i dont think anything is wrong with the Dogs, just have to fine tune the carb.

you guys have been great, thank you so much.

This is just an idea, but it might have some merit. Perhaps when you broke the pin you also partially sheared the flywheel key? Since your engine uses a seperate points cam it could conceivably have dragged it along with the key throwing your timing off a bit. This would cause the engine to idle much higher than normal.
Have you got the idle stop adjusted all the way down? Do you happen to have a timing light or harmonic balancer puller?

Re: 1969 25 hp assistance please

i can get a timming light, i am going to look at my service manual and see what it says.

after cleaning the carb, 1 pull 2 max to start. it will run great i think.

i think i have an issue with the low speed idle. before, i went in to soft seat and back out 1 1/4 turns and got it pretty close. after cleaning, in and back out the same but idle is to high, turning the needle dosnt seems to have an impact of idle rpms or speed. thats where i get confused.

Tom - I took these motor hood pictures for a reference of the decals. Everything is factory original (37 years old). Sorry that they appear jagged. I'm new with this camera and did reduce the pictures down to 40% from full size. Full size would be huge to post. The smaller I make them from full size the more jagged they appear.

These are some indoor pictures (have some flash glare on decal).

If you paint your motor, the paint is..... Johnson - No. 6901 Green Lacquer.

The Pan is different..... don't know what you mean. What is Pan? The lower decal on motor front?

Where or how to get decals is asked often. Go to search above and type in decals, in this forum or Boat Restoration and Building or the others. You will get a lot of hits and hopefully come up with what you want.

Re: 1969 25 hp assistance please

The Model No. will verify your motor year.

My motor is.... Model No. 25R69B.... 25 is the Horse Power and 69 is Year.

If it is a 1969 and the pan is different, it would be the top of the motor was all replaced with another year for some reason. Maybe it was in bad shape or damaged?

In the end, It's all ok. You do have a motor that has a great reputation. Use it a lot and enjoy it!

Re: 1969 25 hp assistance please

they said the power head was replaced, maybe thats it. i am thinking about buying this motor for parts. i priced a shift lever and new its like 60.00 used 40.00, and hood will be hard to come by. if i can get this motor, i think most if not all parts will run on mine. Hood, shifter, and a plus is electric start. what do you think?
