1969 33 HP Johnson Starter Question

I have a 1969 33 HP Evinrude Ski Twin, and a 1969 Johnson 33 HP Sea Horse. Both motors are pretty much identical. I put the Johnson on my boat, and I noticed that there's no solenoid on the starter. The Evinrude has one. I know this is a dumb question, but do I need the solenoid on the John son?
