I've research and seen similar posts and similar videos but none exact. I've got the motor going in a barrel test, Lots of water getting tossed around in the barrel while in neutral , but I see no visible "pee hole" water stream. I thought some water was to come through the exhaust hole below the cowling, back of motor, and I see two holes lower than that with nothing streaming out. The thermostat has been removed from this motor and after running it for 30 to one minute it did seem hot to the touch. Can any one direct to an answer please, thank you.

Have you checked the impeller on the motor? Always a good place to start. Bad impeller and you won't pump any water. If its been more than a year or two since the impeller was changed, change it! If you can't touch the motor after a few minutes of idle, it's too hot. Those old motors do not have a tell tale or "pee hole" like the new motors do. Water should come out of the hole on the back of motor, but at an idle it won't be much more than a mist coming out sporadically. Is your barrel big enough/sturdy enough to put it in gear? If so, try that and see if you get a bit more water coming out of the exhaust holes. Even then, it will be more of a spraying of water coming out and not a stream like you'd see on a new motor.

I am not 100% sure on this, but I believe the lower two holes are just for water that escapes from the water pump, and basically drain water that would be staying in the lower unit and causing damage. You need to be concerned about the water coming out of the larger exhaust hole.

If you took the plastic housing and relief valve out of the thermostat, put it back in. It is necessary.

F_R,, thanks you but how do I know if the plastic housing and relief valve were left in? - I purchased this motor as it sits now and I do have the used thernmostat in a bag. (i guess as it was removed)

Take the thermostat cover off. What do you see in there? A black plastic housing with a white ball below it? Those are the parts I'm speaking of. They control the recirculating system.
