I have a 1969 evinrude 55hp that I am trying to connect a tachometer to. The problem is on this
model it has a cd amplifier and the original
tack ran off the amplifier on a gray wire but the tachometers of today will not run off the cd
amplifier and I am trying where to connect the wire from the tachometer to. I have my tachometer set on 6 poll. I would be greatful for any help.

The tachometer does not get its signal from the amplifier.... it gets it from the rectifier, and that holds true to the present day.

The gray wire at the dash should be connected to the yellow/gray wire at the rectifier/terminal block at the engine.

If the rectifier has two yellow wires instead of one yellow and one yellow/gray.... the gray wire should be attached to one or the other.

The rectifier also has a RED (voltage) wire. DO NOT attach any tachometer wire to that terminal!

The tach should have a dial on the back of it. Set it to number six (6).

Joe, I have a 1970 60hp model and as reelsport said, the grey tach wire came from the amp. The new aftermarket amplifiers state in the instructions that they do not come with a tach wire anymore. Can a wire just be run to the rect. or do we need a tiny tach?

Ddaigle... I know that there is a gray wire leading from the amplifier but to the best of my recollection, it ataches to the number 7 terminal of the engine's wiring terminal block, and goes nowhere from there.

It may have been used as a tach connection originally but done away with due to possible conflicts with the amplifier..... hard to remember it all.

Wire the tachometer as per my previous post.
