Gear lube should be a gear lube for electric shifts Dave. Sold at most places like Walley World and your local J/Rude dealership. Just make sure the container says "FOR ELECTRIC SHIFTS".

To fill....drain the contents of the gear case. Open both the vent and drain plugs. Make sure the engine is straight up and down. Get new drain and vent plug washers too.

Fill the gear case from the bottom up. Put the new lube in slowly untill it comes out the vent hole. Filling slowly gets the air out. When full, put the vent plug in first with the new washer. Then the drain plug.

You can shop on line here at iboats for much of the electrical components or at places like TwinCity outboard. If you have some idea of what you need, post here and most of the guys here can tell you where to get what you need.

Keep the upside dry!

Thanks so much for the reply. When you say fill from the bottom up, are you saying I should force the lube in at the drain plug untill it comes out of the two fill holes at the top? Are you calling the two plugged holes at the top of the unit vent holes?
Thanks
Dave

I only know of one vent hole at the top....sets right above the anti cav plate. Same size as the drain plug. Yes, fill from the bottom up.

Some have two vent plugs. Take them both out.

Didn't know that FR......never ran across one. Odd balls or were they common?

Thanks to both of you. I have this lower unit removed. Looking at the inside, one vent is for the shift solinoid chamber and the other vent is for the gear case (near the upper drive shaft bearing) Its all starting to make sense now. Have a great day.

Exactly. They found that the solenoid chamber would air-lock and not fill. Hence, the extra vent.

I've got the same motor, but I don't recall seeing any place for oil to get into the solenoid chamber. I only have one vent plug. Is it seeping in from the bottom of the chamber? Or is any getting in at all?
