1969 55 hp hydro electric throttle linkage

I have a 1969 55 hp hydro electric and I see where the throttle linkage hooks up but everytime i attach it and move the throttle lever it just pops back off. Is there any secret to doing this?

The terminology "Throttle Linkage" takes in a lot of territory. Just exactly what part/portion of the linkage are you speaking of?

It is the part I circled in the photo. It just connects there but there is nothing to hold it in place.

The little clip is missing off the black cable end.
