Hi ,
yesterday I bought a Johnson 6 hp outboard ,it works but it wasn't used for 2 years so I was wondering could anybody tell me what should i do as a first service so that i get it in good running shape?

I already changed the spark plugs and the oil in the prop housing so is there anything else to do necessary?

And also what percentage of oil to mix ,I use Motul oil for my other outboard.

oil is 50:1

Read up in the secret file posted at the top of this forum. Great tips on waking a sleeping outboard.

Re: 1969 6 hp outboard

Ok i found that later,

now i have a new problem ,actually more problems

1. the engine usually wont start , i think the problem is the fuel pump and im going to change it tomorrow but im not shore what else could the problem be so any ideas?

2. my boat is a bit high for the motor the prop is good but the cooling may be a problem so i was thinking on somehow extending the water intake so that it is always in the water so is that a good idea and how can i make that possible?

If your trying to put a short shaft motor about 15" on a long transom 20"
it wont work except at slow speeds.Water intake is on the leading edge of the exhaust snout if its in the water it should work.
More than likely you'll have to go through the fuel system from tank to carb with special attention to cleaning all passages and jets.Don't do just the carb or just the pump,if the system isn't clean it will just foul up again.
You probably need to get a kicker motor mount or build something to get the motor lower.

Re: 1969 6 hp outboard

well as i saw the water intake is above the horizontal plate over the propeller.
i have i small fishing boat so im not weary interested in doing any modifications.
i already know how to extend the water intake but i was just wondering thaws the impeller have the power to pump water form a (about) 10 cm longer intake

on the motor (because im in Serbia and i really don't know where to find parts )somebody changed the original pump with a Tomos pump ,because my other engine is a tomos a have experience with them so i got to the conclusion that the pump is warn out so im fixing that but if the pump isnt the problem im not shore what can it be else.
