ok i tore down this outboard cleaned it up painted the block put all new gaskets in it put it all back together minus the leg. (I was wondering if it was going to work) So it is just the power head and i hung it in my carport hooked up the control cable and the gas can, planing to turn it over run it a few seconds and turn it off. Well it fired up great but to my suprise it would not shut off by the key, i pulled the control cable of the side in my rush to kill the engine. lol It did nothing but the engine moved and the throttle bumped wide open, it started to buck on the ropes it was hanging on, in my stupidity i went to stop it from bucking and cut my hand open on the flywheel. I then tried to choke it out still wouldnt die. I pulled the gas line off and let it run out of fuel ,as it died it backfired and lit the crates below it on fire ,was not so bad as i was able to just blow them out. I presieded with ectensive curses and a trip to the ER to sew up my hand. It all happend very fast so i dont think it got too hot and is ruined but i am wondering what may have caused it to not turn off what should i check out first. I have already decided to make a sturdy stand and run it with a hose before testing it again. lol thanks

you may already know this but....that was stupid. this post should be put into stupid human tricks no offence man. i'm 15 and know better.....;)

ok well first off it to assemble it back together with a new impeller and lower unit installed. change gear oil with new gaskets on screws. put a kill switch on the engine. if it didnt die when you choked then it was running lean already so clean the carbs. replace fuel lines with alcohol resistant line.

first thing first though check compression to check the condition of the motor.

reeds may have been damaged.

if it went to wide open for a extended amount of time(few seconds) without water most likely by what you said i would believe some damamge has been done.

how's your hand?
