Previous owner let the motor sit (with gas) for quite some time, but ran it before that.

To get it running I:

I fixed a small fuel leak in the inlet hose.
I removed the carb and cleaned it out.
I checked the impellar/pump/greased the shaft again

A couple noob questions:

1. This thing likes to smoke from the exhaust. From all my youtube findings, it does smoke a lot, but how normal is it? The whole water tub looked like a witches pot you'd see at a halloween/haunted house.

2. Is the cooling system supposed to run constantly from the moment the engine starts? I noticed that it doesn't run immediately. Instead its just hot air that comes out the "pee hole" After running it a bit, it starts and the water is very hot. Then it may stop again and just blow hot air. The thermostat at the top and the house interior looks very "worn". But this thing is is almost 40 years old. I'm trusting it still works. How to test that?

Replace the water pump and thermostat. The exhaust smoking is normal especially if it's in a tub as is the film on the surface. Once out on the lake you won't even notice it are you running fresh gas in it.

Water should immediately blow out the exhaust relief and do it continuesly, whether thermostat is open or closed. By immediately, I mean it takes a couple of seconds for it to get there. It won't work properly if not submerged deep enough though. Or in a bucket that is too small.

Smoke and scunge in the tub is one of the most often asked questions. It is supposed to smoke, and the scunge is normal (in a container). It was designed to run on a boat, on the lake, not in a bucket.
