Hi Fellas.

I successfully installed the freshly rebuilt carbs and replaced the entire water pump assembly.
I'm trying to get her to stay running. She will start and run ONLY if I hold the key in the starting position.

EDIT: The ignition switch was the problem. Will a normal automotive tach work? Do I just set it for 4 cylinders?

What is the "normal" position of the slow speed needle valves? I have them backed out 1.5 turns each.
How do I slow the rpm's down? It's on a test stand, so I don't have a throttle cable hooked up.

Thanks!

A car tach won't work. The motor was set up to use a special tach getting a signal from the ignition amplifier. Lotsa luck finding one of those nowadays. I suppose a modern alternator-driven tach may work, but am unsure. Might have a funky number of pulses, but probably not.

But I can answer the needles opening. Initial setting is 5/8 turnout from lightly seated. Per the manual.

There obviously is something wrong with your throttle linkage. Are the carburetor butterflys closing completely? Is the timing plate moving with the throttle? Is the idle stop screw backed off enough to allow idle position? There is a link and sync procedure that must be followed. Got a manual???

Best thing you can do is get an OEM factory service manual. All procedures are shown in them.

5/8ths of a turn out? Wow! That could be a start to my problem. I thought it was 1 and a half turns out! And yeah, I found out the tach I have won't work...it just bottoms out the needle. I was hoping to not need a service manual to get it running since I got this far with the help from you guys, but it looks like it's inevitable.
