1969, 9.8 Merc. Serial # 2510730. Replacing busted water pump.
I installed Ordered shop manual two weeks ago and it has been back-ordered.
It is Saturday morning and all the outboard shops are closed ,so.
(1) Can some one explain, step by step, how do I get the, round, drive key in place to hold the impeller from turning?
(2) Also finding it a little hard to get the new impeller fins bent to get it in the pump.
(3) There is a plastic standpipe that goes from the top of the water pump and slides up onto a copper tubing that moves water up to the motor. This plastic pipe has a loose fit around the copper tubing and must allow excess water to run out. What is the purpose for this loss of water flow, if any?
Thanks for any help.
:) Update- The new water pump is in place and working well. But should there be a small amount of water coming out with the exhaust?
I installed the impeller key by affixing it to the drive shaft with super glue and then just slid the impeller in place while rotating it.
We live in a rural area and the local library did not have any repair manuals.
Thanks for all the help.

I’ve got a V6 so the key maybe different but I put a little grease on the back of the key to hold it in place and then slide the impeller down over it.

To get the impeller inside the housing I use dishwashing soap on the impeller the rotate the drive shaft while pushing down on the impeller housing. The combination of the two should twist the impeller right into the housing.

As for the stand pipe, it's used to bridge the gap between the water pump housing and the water tube going to the motor and yes it should be a loose fit.

mtcamp,

#1 apply a little grease onto the flat of the driveshaft and put the key in place.put some grease around the driveshaft just above the key.

#2 slide the new impeller down the shaft, letting it rest just above the key, lined up.Push down on the impeller as you turn the driveshaft clockwise. If the impeller engages the key,it will turn with the shaft. If it doesn't,take apart and try again.Usually works about the third try.And the fins are in the right direction.

#3 the plastic tube is only a guide for the copper tube, and the tube is snug in the waterpump housing when the gearcase is fully tighened up.

DHP

yes the water should come out of two places
, a little wee hole under the motor and out the exhaust. the little hole tells you that the pump is working and water is moving through the head.

hello
they made a special tool to install the impeller in the cup. I use a wire tie and bend the blades in the normal direction and the tie off as you load the impeller in the cup. and yes the plastic is just an assy guide.
if the impeller blades are not facing the right way the pump wont work correctly. there is not enough room in that pump for them to correct themselves.

Hi Rodbolt. Can you describe the special tool? I never saw one before. We have a bunch of old special tools laying around. Might have it and not know it.

willy
its just a ring that you load the impeller in then set it on the cup and push. remember the old merc tinymites had a flat wear plate on top and the impeller sat in a cup molded in the base. was a royal pain but it worked.
which is the one thing I like about saltwater. all them old motors are gone and I dont work on them anymore :)
no white mercs, red mercs, elgins,scott-attwaters,mcoulloughs or martins or even chyslers :) :)
been there done that and got over it :) :)
