1969, 9.8 Merc. Serial # 2510730. Replacing busted water pump.
I installed Ordered shop manual two weeks ago and it has been back-ordered.
It is Saturday morning and all the outboard shops are closed ,so.
(1) Can some one explain, step by step, how do I get the, round, drive key in place to hold the impeller from turning?
(2) Also finding it a little hard to get the new impeller fins bent to get it in the pump.
(3) There is a plastic standpipe that goes from the top of the water pump and slides up onto a copper tubing that moves water up to the motor. This plastic pipe has a loose fit around the copper tubing and must allow excess water to run out. What is the purpose for this loss of water flow, if any?
Thanks for any help.
Update- The new water pump is in place and working well. But should there be a small amount of water coming out with the exhaust?
I installed the impeller key by affixing it to the drive shaft with super glue and then just slid the impeller in place while rotating it.
We live in a rural area and the local library did not have any repair manuals.
Thanks for all the help.
