Good projects! Suggest you copy and past the outboard info. in a post over in the outboards section. Pictures very useful there too.**

You may be able to reuse that brass drain left in place, but not a problem to replace. Pic of that would help (pic of the transom work).

[ed. **same thread you have going there]

need a smaller camera! :D

.....sorry. Clicking on the camera icon when posting usually works for me, grabbing images from my laptop. Follow the prompts.

stringer measurements

can anyone give me some advice on how I would go about replacing the stringers on my boat as far as measuring for shape? what method works best for a novice boat wright? I think I can handle deck and transom quite well now its just the stringer curve gradient I'm concerned about. iv seen people make templates but mine are far beyond that iv seen people just wing it and cut a little at a time. iv also seen people use string to keep the hight level and pack in the minor undercuts with pb.

what is the best method you have used and does the stringer have to go right to the tip of the hull or is it ok to put a bulk head a foot back as I have seen people do as well. any advice would be appreciated. also iv seen shaped 2x6 and plywood laminate what would be best?

finally got the picture issue worked out. here's a picture of the transom I'm working on as u can see I got the majority of the old wood removed and working on slowly chiseling away at the remaining flakes that are attached to the old fiberglass by epoxy

Are you sure its epoxy?

Alpex liky used polyester resin, unless a previous owner redid the transom

I'm gling to merge this topic and the stringer topic under an Alumacraft Alpex rehab topic. The stringers, deck amd transom are all connected to one another, use similar materials and methods and ultimately the work on one leads into work.on the other so the pix, questions and helpful replies wont have to be duplicated

Ok?

Looks like you got the pix figured out.

idk what type they used all ik is the previous owner replaced it with a really shisty looking job it wasn't sealed and got filled with water. he had also build homemade storage boxes attached to the transom that I cut out for being water logged as well. the side supports were rotten inside to pulp and I'm sure the stringers are as well bc when I stand in the boat the floor kinda gives and the stringers cant be too big. theres only aprox 3 inches between the floor inside and the outside hull.

You will get a ton more help if you can post a ton of pictures! I can attest to that. Typically if you can save the stringers and get them somewhat dry you can traced the template onto new lumber. In my Searay that I'm currently redoing, they were so rotten that I could not save any piece of it so I made sure to take plenty of measurements both fore and aft basically using the top of the floor as the termination measurement and then subtracting whatever sheeting you plan on using for the floor.

Yep, pix pix pix

Topics merged

Go back and re read WOGs transom, stringers and deck graphic

Make sure the boats hull (more then just sitting on the trailer) has good support so as you dismantle it and crawl around inside it, it keeps its shape.
