1969 Bayliner...Great Story...great boat..w/???

Hey...I'm Jeff from the Pacific Norhwest. Vancouver Washington. I am a member of various fishing boards and have recently become a boat owner! So, naturally I started "fishing" for a boat site. So I can find like minded people. I've been very impressed with the thing's I've read and how great everyone is about helping people. Doesn't seem like lot's of Ego's around...

It wasn't all by choice but it's the way it's turned out and I am 100% sure I am blessed.

So my friend got this boat when he was 14 in trade for some work he did. It needed some love and my friend did the work. But some where in the refurb...the tags missing..so no max HP rating anywhere. I'm curious if anyone has any idea's. It had a blown 50 on it when he got it. He found a 35 and used it under powered. He fished iit and loved it. We started it up so I could borrow it and The 35 cracked the block when I started using the boat. He has now given me the boat! as he has a big sled..and that he was actually needing a new place for it to live.

Now I've gotta find the right HP to put on there. I couldn't find anyting out when I asked my local bayliner dealer. The said records only went to 74. I'm ready to buy an 65.maybe an 80..who knows...It's a 16 foot. Any thought's ideas..CONCERNS?? It's in really great shape. Completely restored, new fiberblass on the inside and out....It's been sitting covered for the last 8 years.

Welcome to the forum fisherfield.
Lots of knowledgeable people here. As for your boat, are you sure there is no plate anywhere on the boat? Or a spot where it looks like it might have been mounted? You can always contact Bayliner (phone of e-mail)...they might have some historic info and they usually respond to enquiries. You will need to provide the model of boat, etc.
Regardless, that boat in that year would have had an 'official' rating although what it is, is unknown so far. Do you have any pics you could post? In my opinion, I would guess that a 65hp would be a pretty safe bet on that boat...maybe an 80-85hp but it depends not only on the 'official' rating but on the condition of the boat.
How is the transom? Solid? Big? Beefy? Reinforced?

ok I had a 15 ft 8in Sangster Craft, it was rated for 65 hp max we had a 80 merc 2 stroke on it, a little tail heavy but went like Jack the Bear, 45mph wide open

Hey Guys!

Thanks for the replies to my first and only post thus far on the site.

I ended up finding a great 86 70hp Evinrude with power trim..it's like a little rocket ship. My daughters and I ended up taking it out last Sunday. We've been waiting for another chance to get out there and rip it up. Can't wait.
