I found a 100.00 boat motor and trailer on Craiglist so I bought it with the intension of restoring it. I have never owned a boat before but always wanted to (never had the cash).
My wife finally figured out what year it was after searching some old show room brochures we found on the Internet.
I have a question on hull repair and crazing. What I have found out so far is,
1.) I hate fiberglass (very itchy).
2.) Boat was operated with very wet foam. The foam was soaked to the core, stringers were dust in spots from the moisture and the transom was rotted completely by water and ants that moved in. Stress crack around the bottom of the transom, probably because the motor was flapping in the breeze.
3.) I hate fiberglass!!!
4.) After a complete gutting, I looked very close at the hull and found a lot of spidering below the water line or below the Deck line since the deck was half *** replaced.
5.) I think being stored outside in Michigan with that much water in the foam the expansion from freezing caused most of the cracks. Just my guess.
6.) I inspected the hull from the inside and it does not appear to have any cracks that go all the way through.
7.) Found a hole on the starboard side just as the keel starts to turn up towards the bow that was packed with Bondo and never patched. I ground it all out and patched it from the inside with layers of Biaxial and matt.
I was planning on re-gel coating since I have the hull separated and completely emptied.
Is it better to sand the hull completely back or if I skim coat the entire hull with polyester resin ( after sanding of course) Can I gel coat over that to keep the cracking contained (and keep it from sponging water)?
Or am I wasting my time and money. I never played with any of this before so its been a fun learning experience (I also got to buy some new tools). Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
