So I just replaced the impeller on my '69 evinrude 115, but I can't get the lower unit back on. It's like the drive shaft is hitting something. Tried spinning it slowly while pushing up on lower unit but no luck after about 20 minutes straight. Is there a trick?? Or is it just a pain in the a** and I just have to keep at it?

Also your shift rod and water tubes must be lined up.

That 69 doesn't have a shift rod but it has two water tubes that get to be a real pain to get lined up as you raise the lower. There are two different length "guide tubes" to help. Sometimes it's just as easy to set the motor vertical and raise the lower unit with a floor jack.
BTW make sure you shift cable doesn't wrap around the driveshaft.

i dont know if this will help but i took a long peice of 550 cord (heavy duty thin braided string) i tied it to one of the rear hood latches and looped it under the lower units bottom fin then back up to the other hood latch so i could hold it in place while i lined up the tubes and made sure the wires were not going to be inched then slolwy turned the flywheel while pulling on the string until the splines slipped into place
