I have a 1969 40 HP Selectric Shift Evinrude that I cannot find in the manual the wiring for the shift. Does anyone know the wire colors for forward -neutral-reverse (and where they would be located on the motor?)? And an easy way to wire switch with a safety so I cant shift to reverse at full throttle?

If you have the Evinrude Selectric control, there is supposed to be a slider inside that keeps you from pushing the buttons at high throttle settings.

Green is forward, Blue is reverse. No connection for neutral. Warning!! do not use a Hydro-Electric control or switch on the 40. It will bust something the first time you put it in reverse. The switches look alike.

I dont have any control with it. I was planning on using a on-off-on switch instead.

I believe if it's a 1969 that it is a Hydro Electric Shift. Which would be green for neutral, purple for reverse, and nothing for forward.

There is not an easy way to rig a common double-throw switch to have a lock out. The best I've done with rigging the control with a toggle switch is to put a flip over toggle switch cover to try to prevent bad things from happening.
