Hello all I have a big problem. I have acquired a 1969 Evinrude 40hp with electric shift and I have been having problems with it not being able to get my boat up on plan. It pushes the boat along good at slow speeds but as soon as you open the throttle it will put out the rpm’s but I don’t' go no where. It will also all of a sudden kit out and stop and the motor will rev up (like it was in neutral) and I will lower the throttle and kick it back up and it will go again just to do the same thing again and again. So I went to change the lower end grease thinking I might have put to heavy of a grease in it (I know if it has to heavy of a grease with the electric shift it will have a hard time going in to or staying in gear) but all of a sudden it drained fine but when I went to put the grease back in it would go in the bottom hole but I could not get it to come out of the top one..??? Any Ideas.??? Thanks for your time…

Howdy, RR.

Are you sure you aren't getting prop ventilation? How about a spun prop?

Your gearcase calls for OMC type "C" oil. Be sure that is what you use.

The "fail safe" mode of your gearcase is that it will go to FWD if there is a failure in the shifting system.

Let us know what you find. :)

Prop Ventilation..???. I have tried different props with the same result. I am not sure what gear case old I used before I went out I just put it in and did not look (I don't know why I did that) It is not locked in FWD I can still shift it just seems like when I kick it in to high gear it kicks out of FWD for some reason..?? My main worried right now is that when I went to change the oil it would go in the bottom but would not come out the top no matter what I did and after taking it out after changing the oil the over heating alarm went off..???
