No 75 HP in 69'... 65 or 85HP maybe...Mechanical shift?

Something does not add up, "69" all were electric shift.

i really dont know enough about out boards its my first boat and im just a rookie..i know its got a lever that shifts fowrad and backwards thats all i know.will it make a diffrence if its electrical or mechanical?everything on this old motor seams to be mechanical!all i know is that it runs great on slow speeds as soon as i try to speed up,it kicks into neutral, but it doesnt stall out i just slow the motor down and manualy shift it back to foward

Can I assume you mean it slips as being different from actually jumping out of gear? Slipping is usually the result of a slipping propeller hub. Make a mark on the prop nut and another on the propeller, aligned. Run the motor till the suspected slippage occurs, stop and look at the marks. Are they still aligned? No? Then the hub slipped. Replace the propeller or send it to a prop shop for re-hubbing.

You'll have to at least give us the year, or serial number, if we're to help you out. Lots of different models.

Aha, re-reading your older posts, you said that you have to manually put it back into gear. So it actually is moving the gearshift lever from forward to neutral??? If that is the case, you have a manual shift and the clutch dog and forward gear in the lower unit are worn out. Be prepared to spend some bucks on new parts.

so you think for what its gonna cost me that i should just get a new lower unit?the clutch dog's gonna cost me around 80 bucks and the foward gear is about 600!bucks....or am i better off fixing it?is there other parts that you recommend me replacing once i have it all apart?

Just all the seals and if you haven't done it lately, the water pump. $600?? whew, I knew it would be expensive, but......

It's probably just the clutch dog that's worn. Gleaning some insight from other posts around here, sometimes you can flip them and get a little more life. Or so it seems.
