1969 evinrude, need help

Whats up, I just bought a used boat with an 69 evinrude 55,for some reason it will run out of the water with hose hooked to it. But when I get it to the river and start it,it will only run for a couple of seconds. Please help model # is 55973a, thanks

ou have set you idle while on muffs, the idle speed has to be set in the water, in gear 650-700 rpms, it will idle higher in neutral and on muffs. set the idle on muffs at around 800, then adjust in the water, in gear.

sorry but I am new to boating what is muffs and how can I tell how many rpms without a tach. ps. I am a former floridian Sanford/Orlando
