Tried to test the old rectifier out of an 85 hp and didn't come up with any readings at all with an ohm meter. I bought a new one thinking that it was bad. The new one after being installed on the engine had the same thing. No reading on the ohm meter at all using the method shown by j. reeves. So we took it back to the marine store and tested a new one they had on the shelf with the same results. Any ideas? they were stumped as well. It's the smaller round 3 wire rectifier.

Many/most digital multimeters simply wont test those diodes. But the cheapest of analog meter types will.

FR is dead right about digital multimeters. Some will work on some of the ohms ranges though. Try the highest range.

BUT if they have a diode test range that will do the trick. Use that. You might not get the readings you would have expected from an ohms range (ie zreo one way infinity the other) but you'll be able to test your rectifier OK.
