1969(ish) Saf-T-Mate serial number location?

My friend just giot a 1969 saf-t-mate in pretty good shape. We can't find the VIN. Just a 4 digit number stamped on the rear aluminum trim around the motor mount. Anybody know where to find the VIN? I suggested maybe trying to research it cia the only other obvious ID on the boat, the registration sticker. MC number has been removed (yeah, I know... Red flag, right?)
i didn't see a Saf-T-Mate forum in Boats by Manufacturer (didn't see Four Winns, either, who bought out Saf-T-Mate he says).

Pre-1972 didn't have HIN numbers...
It would probably be state issued when registered after 1972..
Supposed to be permanently marked on the outside of the transom, usually upper starboard side by owner if it was state issued.

Most likely that was never done, so the only other place to look is on the paperwork. The title should have it..

Still a relative newbie here, but that's how I understand it anyway...
